Everyday Calculators

Handy tools for daily life — your exact age, days between dates, splitting a tip, measuring a room, and the fuel cost of a road trip. Answers in seconds, explained in plain English.

These tools cover the small calculations that come up at home, at a restaurant or before a trip. Each one works with the units you already use, such as feet and inches, miles per gallon and calendar dates, and shows how the answer was reached so you can check it.

How to choose the right calculator

Working with dates

To find how old someone is, or was on a specific date, use the age calculator. To count the days, weeks or business days between any two dates, such as a deadline or a notice period, use the date calculator.

Splitting a bill

At a restaurant, the tip calculator works out the tip, the total and each person's share, with an option to round each share up to a whole dollar.

Home projects and trips

For flooring, carpet or tile, the square footage calculator gives the area, the material to buy with a waste allowance and an optional cost. Before a drive, the fuel cost calculator turns distance, MPG and gas price into a trip cost.

Guide to each calculator

Square Footage Calculator

Answers how big a room is and how much material it needs. Enter the length and width in feet and inches, the number of identical rooms, an optional waste allowance and an optional price per square foot; you get the area per room and in total, the same area in square yards and square meters, the material to buy and its cost. Open the square footage calculator.

Fuel Cost Calculator

Answers what a drive will cost in gas. Enter the trip distance, your car's fuel economy in MPG, the gas price and whether it is one way or a round trip; you get the total fuel cost, gallons needed, cost per mile and cost per 100 miles. Open the fuel cost calculator.

Tip Calculator

Answers what to tip and what each person owes. Enter the bill amount, pick a tip percentage or a preset, and set how many people are splitting; you get the tip amount, total with tip, and each person's tip and total, with an option to round each share up. Open the tip calculator.

Age Calculator

Answers how old someone is on a given date. Enter the date of birth and the age-at date, which defaults to today; you get the age in years, months and days, the totals in months, weeks, days and hours, the weekday of birth and the days until the next birthday. Open the age calculator.

Date Duration Calculator

Answers how long it is between two dates. Enter a start date and end date and choose whether to include the end day; you get the total days, the same span in weeks and calendar months, the number of business days and weekend days, and the total hours. Open the date calculator.

Getting accurate answers

Most errors come from the inputs rather than the math. Measure rooms wall to wall and enter feet and inches in their own fields. Use your car's real-world MPG rather than the sticker figure if you know it. For dates, check whether your deadline counts the last day, and for a tip, decide whether you are tipping on the subtotal or the total with tax before you enter the bill.

About our everyday calculators

Some of the most useful math is also the most ordinary: how many days until a deadline, what each person owes at dinner, how much flooring a room needs, or what a road trip will cost in gas. The days between dates calculator counts calendar days, weeks and business days between any two dates, and the fuel cost calculator turns distance, MPG and pump price into a trip total and a cost per mile. Our everyday calculators handle these in a tap, with big fields that work on your phone and results you can copy or print. Each tool explains its method, including the assumptions — like whether the end date is counted — so you know exactly what the number means.
